Switch to Lithium without DC to DC or Li-BIM?

I mounted the charger next to the RRBox (the 110 cable is long enough) so the 12V cables would be fairly short into it.

Don’t know about the AGM2 although I turn the Magnum off and let the Lithiums discharge…helps that the MH is stored in my house.

Nice. Love your setup!

Gathering Update
Scotty Hutto

I heard from Sun n’ Fun this morning, and although they had some trees down, no damage that would affect the Gathering!

Also, we’re really close to the required number of coaches! Just need a handful more coaches to register and we’ll be full speed ahead a full month before the deadline!

We will have some exciting updates to the agenda over the next few days.

If you haven’t signed up, now’s the time!

If you have signed up, Thank You!

Amp Draw from AC's
Tom Cherry
22 hours ago, Venturer said:

Thanks Tom. I did not turn off the charger and inverter, so I retried the test with them both off and got the same results. Probably because everything was fully charged and all other electrical was off. When on shore power, all three units seem to be working fine. 13-14 amps on the front and 17 amps each on the middle and rear units. From that assume all three are working as designed. The puzzling thing is that the generator carried a slightly higher voltage but a higher amp draw on all of the units, especially the middle and rear. The problem has to be where the generator feeds into the electrical system. Transfer Switch ????. The shop I am taking it to is an RV repair facility and they only work on RV's, mostly motorhomes, so they will certainly know more than me. I was hoping to offer some educated suggestions.

YOUR CALL.

BUT, you do need to be aware.  You have an OUT OF PRODUCTION SurgeGuard ATS.  It has a SPECIAL output module.  That module feeds the INFO into the Aladdin system.  Most folks do everything they can to keep it working.  We have had several writeups about HOW to install a NEW ATS and then salvage the Module.

Not exactly for the FAINT HEARTED.  But these folks did it.

To explain.  Surge Guard, when your ATS was made....was producing the ATS (SAME PN...that is WHAT IS REALLY CONFUSING).  Then later on... Aladdin quit or went out of business.  ANYWAY.  The 2005 (or maybe a little earlier) Upper ENDS....like your Sig....have a Combo SURGE Suppressor and ATS Combo.  The SURGE is achieved by some little "NECCO WAFER" looking electronic component on a Printed Circuit Board.  That switch, since a LOT of MH's had the Aladdin, had a special "INTERNAL MODULE".  It sends out a coded signal to the Aladdin.  OK....the MH industry got decimated circa 2008 and Monaco went bankrupt (as did many other ones) and THEN SurgeGuard put out a NEWER model of the Combo Surge and ATS switch.  BUT, there was NO MARKET nor demand for the Aladdin OUTPUT.  They DROPPED IT OUT.  YES....not VERY "Customer" friendly.  Sell a REPALCEMENT that has the SAME PN and same SPECS.  BUT, the internals are different.  There is NO OUPTUT Terminal or place to PLUG IN THE ALADDIN interface.  SO, we have folks all the time say..

Put in a NEW SurgeGuard (SAME PN) ATS.  NOW, my Aladdin DON'T WORK.  What did I (or the TECH) do WRONG??? I WANT IT FIXED.

The ANSWER IS...  You (or the TECH) did NOTHING WRONG.  The NEW SurgeGuard Surge and ATS device DOES NOT SUPPORT or WORK WITH THE Aladdin system on your MH.  OMG or @$#$@# is the usual response.   I NEVER KNEW...

You may have 100% confidence in your EXPERTS.  BUT, only 10% of the TECHS (my GUESS....as we have folks post things like... MY TECH DID NOT KNOW....YOU JUST SOLVED IT) are NOT that familiar or knowledgeable about the Monaco's.  EVEN REV doesn't know.

SO...  Before I authorized a MIGHT NOT KNOW Tech to diagnose and tell you he can FIX your issue....I would be VERY Surprised.

The ISSUE is either in your MAIN panel and the PM needs to be DONE THERE....  That is the FIRST STEP.

The readings that you have on the Aladdin might be OK.  It just depends on when you take them.

I hope you understood the point that "YOU MIGHT be able to spend $1,200 or so.....and get a year...or more....how BAD is your Compressor worn?" That is more rehetorical and NOT anything that anyone can answer.  SO...  You need to be aware that making sure that the connections for the AC in the Plenum are TIGHT.  You need to make sure the Main Panel does not have LOOSE wires.  You need to make sure that the Circuit Breakers are OK.  THEY DO GO BAD...  You need to make sure that the Connections in the ATS are TIGHT.  That's about the list.

BUT IF YOU SAY.  I think I got a bad ATS....sometimes that will "influence" the tech.  And it never fixes it.

It is BETTER that you learn what the issues can be.  Odds are....if you have a lot of use on the AC units....it is getting time....to either replace them....or spend the $$ for new one.  Be aware that if you only REPLACE ONE....There will be at least $400 EXTRA to pull the NEW controller and install a DUMB DOWN controller.....otherwise it will NOT work with your 5 Button thermostat.  You also need to be aware that there is a scarcity of 5 Button Thermostats and you might have to chase around.  Ebay supposedly had them.

SO...  From MY POINT of VIEW.  If I had a HVAC go bad. I would not sink lost money in the SOFT STARTS.  YES>..that might buy you some time.  If you are going to sell it....that might be a good deal. BUT, if you plan to keep it...  DO you WANT to spend $400 or so to DUMB DOWN the unit.  Once you have to REPLACE the OTHER TWO and get the NEW Thermostat (CCC2...the Old system is a CCC), you have to have the Original controller installed in the FIRST unit. It is NOT cost effective to keep DUMBING DOWN Units.

Just trying to make you aware and also temper your expectations....unless you have a really GOOD shop.

Good Luck....You might want to review my posts again and let it sink it.

Let us know what the tech finds.....it MAY BE SIMPLE.  But folks have left units for days and ran up a BIG Troubleshooting bill or authorized repairs that really were NOT the issue...

Move tv to over entry door?
waterskier_1

Do you have enough height over the door and the steps to mount a TV without hitting your head entering or exiting?  Most front TVs drop down lower than the height of the door.  Otherwise, there should be no problem as long as you can securely mount it so it doesn't move around while traveling.  The TV has no idea where it is.

Battery temp sensor / temp compensation
TANDD2

It appears that over the past 2.5 years in storage my 4 L16 house bank batts have been fried. I watered every month; seemed to take more as time went by. When I pulled it out of covered storage , where it was on 115 volts with Freedom invertor on, they would not hold a charge. Voltage out of charger was over 14 at float. It was suggested that I unplug the temp sensor and see what resulted. By this time I had determined batts were fried so I replaced them. with new batts charge voltages are normal and drop down to 13.5 at float as it should.

Now the question, how beneficial is temp compensation and should I replace temp sensor?

I think you would have to install a very small tv in that location so as not to run into it. Not sure of your layout but I moved mine here on a lift

Problem is usually neighbors you have met during your stay, coming over to say 'so long'!

Distracts you from what you were doing.

aux air compressor for air leveling

After replacing my leaking air dryer I decided to investigate why the auto leveling system was not working.

First issue was one the electrical connectors on the air pressure switch for the aux pump was broken. I replaced that and then the pump ran for a minute  and then shut off. I was hopeful that was all it would need but alas the pump started running very briefly (2-3 seconds) every 3-4 minutes. Not sure if it was in this thread or not but somewhere in the forum someone mentioned needing a check valve at the aux pump air line to prevent air leaking back through the pump. I was not able to identify a leak at the pump but I added a check valve and the aux pump is no longer running every 3-4 minutes. I am hopeful this has resolved the issue with my coach.

I thought I would share my experience and pass along my appreciation to all the contributors to this topic.

Thanks

Jeff

Take a look at my post of 2/12/2023 on page 2 of this thread.  You likely have a dirty internal reed valve on the compressor head.  I explained how to disassemble and clean it.  Adding an external check valve will work but a leaking internal check valve lowers the compressor efficiency due to the extra volume between the external check valve and the compressor head.

Norcold Polar Elite 12v - Any Reviews?

My search turned up only 1 review.  Not a real review as it was mentioned only in passing.

So I'll specifically ask: does anyone here have  experience with the Norcold Polar Elite 12v?

I always do a full walk around while the coach is airing up. Sometimes I catch things that I was sure I had taken care of or meant to.

Nothing like a good preflight walk around. I always start at the nose and work my way to the right and end up at the nose.  If I get distracted, I start from the beginning. Never rush it.

Norcold Polar Elite 12v - Any Reviews?
Tom Cherry

This usually gets FLAMED.

Quick Google lists the Norcold for $4675 (free Shipping) to $4050 (plus shipping... I THINK).

The Samsung RF18 is usually around $1,000 or so....max if $1200

Most installers get $900 - $1200.  YOU MAY have an issue if there is a FURNACE underneath.  BUT, MANY have made the Samsung work in Diplomats....not sure about your year.

SO..maybe $2,400 INSTALLED.  Your Inverter is probably a 2,000 WATT Square Wave.  Folk with Square Wave have NOT reported any issues.....and Samsung says OK FOR INVERTER....Square included....does NOT need a Pure Sine Wave

Most folks only run their Genny's maybe 2 - 3 hours every 24 to keep the Batteries charged.  The Genny takes maybe 0.4 GPM so figure 1.5 Gal at $3.50.  Your cost is $5.25 per day....NOW, I DID not calculate the Propane....but you can from the specs

Install will probably be at least $800...if it fits without modifying the Furnace.  SO....use $4,400 plus $800 or maybe $5,200 total out of pocket

Samsung is $2,400 out of pocket.

That is $2,800 or TWICE the cost of a Samsung.  At $5.25 per day...assuming you were boondocking....  That would still be 533 days or or about 18 MONTHS of DAILY genny...

Just curious....as to the need....and it is YOUR RIG...to go 12 VDC instead of the more (95%) conventional RES REFER install.

I had to do TOO MANY Capital Request Justification when I worked.... so I "THINK LIKE THIS"....which sometimes drives my DW crazy.

Just a thought....Good luck.

Don't know if a Lambert 415 will work.  Move tv to over entry door?

A lift behind the sofa won't work. In my 30' the kitchen sink and entry door are across from the sofa. So the only place to move it is over the door.

Amp Draw from AC's
Venturer

Thanks Tom for the information. It's a lot to digest. Might have to read it a few times. As I said before, all three AC units work fine when plugged into shore power. 14 amp draw on the front and 17 amps on the middle and rear units. That leads me to assume they are working as designed. The higher amp draw when on the generator leads me to think resistance in the connections of that circuit. The Generator has less than 1000 hours on it. Everything was fine, or at least it seems so, until the last couple days ago. The shop that is working on the chassis AC told me they referred all house AC work to another shop in town.  I should get the coach back tomorrow and will try to check for loose connections before taking it to the other shop. It would be helpful if I could locate a service tech in the Lake Havasu City, AZ area who is familiar with Monaco's design before relying on an unexperienced one. Thanks for your input.

Fixing Damage

Well, I knew it would happen, I was hoping not so soon. I have owned my 2005 Diplomat 40PDQ since Sept 24. Yesterday while moving it around I caught the edge of my house and damaged a 6”-8” section of the side right below the Awning.

What would you suggest I do to repair/minimize any further damage? TIA

If that gash is in fiberglass and there is no puncturing, you don't need to do anything.

Will require sanding, body filler, sanding, cleaning, masking, priming, painting, clear coat.

the Gutter can be banged out with body tools.  I did same this summer backing up and clocked my gutter.  Not quite as mangled as yours, but fixed in about an hour.  No one knows now 🙂

Norcold Polar Elite 12v - Any Reviews?
VinceB

Yes, lots to consider. I’ve done a few CBA’s – cost/benefit analysis myself.

I do 5-6 boondock trips a year – about 4-5 nights each so my concern is power consumption.

My other concern is ease of installation - I’m not going to tackle it. I like the idea of a cut and paste install.  I do have a heater underneath the Norcold.

OTH for the dollars saved on the Samsung, I could buy a few hundred watts of solar and (maybe) have the power I need. I've installed solar before so it's not a challenge for me to do myself.

Definitely need to push a pencil on this one. Happily, my Norcold still works very well.. for now.

My first step is to find a reason(s) not to install a Norcold 12v or some reasons to consider it.  Maybe I'll consider a 12v conversion but then I'll still have only 12 CF of storage. The DW will appreciate the  extra room.

BTW: the cheapest diesel here is ARCO R95 at $4.35/gal and my inverter is a 1500.

Our site hosting provider had a major system crash today, and the site only came back online late this evening (eastern time).  If the problem persists tomorrow with your phone please email me.  I sent you and email so you would have my address.  I'll take it up with our provider.

Battery temp sensor / temp compensation

I doubt the battery temp sensor is the cause for your fried batteries.

It is just a nice to have and not mandatory.

You need to read your inverter manual and make sure it's set up properly for the type of batteries you have.

Might take an hour on each.  I'd try buffing the fiberglass, it will easily be 90% better with an hours work, maybe five minutes?  The gutter is thin aluminum, if you're handy with a hammer and a couple blocks of wood, it will be NEARLY invisible with a little work.  If you're not handy, get somebody to straighten it out if it matters to you, don't end up like this:

Switch to Lithium without DC to DC or Li-BIM?

On 10/13/2024 at 6:08 AM, Mocephus said:

Hi Tom, yes so far all is going very well!

We have been boondocking for the last two weeks in Western NC and the 300ah Epoch battery has been amazing. We can leave the coach all day and no longer have to worry about dead house batteries and a warm refrigerator when we get back!

With the generator running and a 100 amp battery charger on the LiFePo, I’m getting a 30% charge rate per hour. I can go from a nearly depleted battery to a full charge in a little over 3 hrs.

Some have asked so I’m going to test the alternator today with a depleted house battery and no load on the house side to see if the alternator puts more into the battery than the max 32 amps that I saw in a previous test, with a load present. Stay tuned.

Switching over to LiFePo has been the best and easiest upgrade I have made to our coach. I literally just pulled out my 8 FLA house batteries, installed the one 300ah LiFePo, switched my charger profile to “GEL” and switched my solar charger to match my new battery’s charge profile. I ordered a second battery yesterday. 🙂

Great to hear another happy LiFePo RVer.

Front Air Conditioning Unit Randomly Shuts off Leaving Thermostat Blank for Zone 2
TomV48
On 7/9/2024 at 12:46 PM, AlanC2 said:

The Zone 2 (front) air conditioning in our 2002 Windsor will randomly shut down (without reaching the set temperature) after running for anywhere from 20 minutes to 3.5 hours. Zone 1 has will still have all functions available. Zone 2 in the thermostat, is blank and there are no functions available. I can get it to work again by turning off the master switch at the bottom of the thermostat for a while, then back on. All functions return to zone 2 for a while. Years ago, in the winter, the propane heat for Zone 2 failed and I tracked it down to a bad AC control board in the front unit.  At that time, I also replaced the 5 button thermostat with a spare that had come with the motorhome. It's too hot out now to swap out the control boards between the two air conditioning units to test, so I've just ordered a new control board, and a Micro-Air thermostat to replace the old 5 button one in case it's a thermostat problem.

When this first happened, we were in a state park with a 30 amp hookup, and I thought maybe as it was a low voltage situation and the EMS kicking in, as I've had that happen before in a state park when the voltage dropped to 90VAC. This time, it also happened twice while running the generator to power zone 2 air conditioning while driving.

I have two questions.

1. Since the associated propane furnace won't function with a bad AC power control board in the heat pump unit on the roof, will a bad board in the furnace impact air conditioning operation?

2. Should I be checking something else?

Thanks in advance!

AlanC2

Everybody wants to get all technical about these kinds of things but our bedroom AC was cutting out randomly.  Along with cleaning the coils externally, I opened the fan vent above my head and found that the insulators and baffles had moved around so that it was recirculating air internally without circulating it out in to the room.  This was causing the unit to shut down; causing the unit to freeze up; and was causing the unit to drip water on me in my sleep at night.  We clean the coils on the outside and straightened out the baffling on the inside and that thing is unlike new.    Incorrect air circulation is apparently hard on the whole system

Norcold Polar Elite 12v - Any Reviews?
JohnC3

About 2.5 years ago My original fridge was found to have an ammonia leak during annual.maint. I wanted a 12v replacement and ordered the Norcold artic elite you are looking at. I had the shop that did my annual.maintmpirnit in for ~5k. They needed to remove the dining room slide window, raise it with a forklift and damaged broke the door latching mech. Got it fixed under warrantee. The fridge needs to vent into the rig, so I needed to close up the upper and lower vents. Not the most satisfactory install.

But getting to the unit. It needs 10awg wires for the 12v power. My 2008 Camelot had them.  The unit works well, but Maybe due to the install the freezer iced up in a month. I took the lower door out of the fridge to let me defrost it better (NO AUTO Defrost on this unit) it came out like a huge drawer by a lever on the slides. Ended up finding the slides were damaged (install again, don't know). Turns out you are not supposed to remove the bottom bin. Got new slide kit under warrantee.

Short advice is pass on this fridge. It cools great, sips power and looks cool with blue led accents. The downsides are  Manual defrost only and you are not supposed to remove the door ( so you just wait for the ice to melt above the bin. Norcold said it should need defrosting maybe once or twice a year, I needed to do it once a month! Now YMMV, I think my rails were messed up on install and the freezer door might not seal as well as it should (hence the defrost every month).

Would I buy this again... NO.  5k fridge with no auto defrost!  Inadequate rails for the bottom bin (in my opinion) leading to Norcold telling you to not remove the bin. That make defrost a multi hour process with the freezer door open. In my rig that blocks the hall to the bath/bedroom.

I have a good dose of buyers remorse. If the unit had auto defrost and stronger slides. I still probably would buy it again. 5k is too much to spend for this unit.

Hope it helps!
